Prescriptions During Pregnancy

Important changes from 1 September 2025

From 1 August 2025, GP surgeries in Derbyshire will no longer provide prescriptions for certain pregnancy-related medications.
This is because these prescriptions form part of maternity services, which are delivered by the Hospital Trusts (through your midwife and obstetric team), not by GP practices.

As of 1st September 2025 we will no longer respond to prescription requests from the Community Midwife team

What this means for you

If your midwife has requested any of the following, your midwife and/or obstetric team will arrange the prescription for you:

  • Aspirin
  • Folic Acid
  • Iron tablets
  • Antibiotics for urinary tract infections
  • Injections to prevent blood clots (e.g., Tinzaparin, Dalteparin – “LMWH Heparins”)
  • Other pregnancy-related medications (e.g., anti-sickness medication)

Why is this change happening?

  • Prescribing for these medicines is part of hospital maternity services, not GP care.
  • This change ensures prescriptions are managed directly by the teams who are overseeing your pregnancy.

What you should do

  • Speak to your midwife or obstetric team if you need any of the medications listed above.
  • They will make the arrangements for you to receive your prescription.

Thank you for your understanding
These changes are intended to make sure your care is coordinated and provided by the team who know your pregnancy best.
